A new episode of the TalkLandscape, a podcast from the Global Landscapes Forum, features TRAFFIC Project Officer Oli Wright in conversation with host Eden Flaherty on the growing role of technology in tackling wildlife trafficking.

The podcast explores how criminal networks exploit online marketplaces, social media platforms and global supply chains, and emphasises wildlife trafficking as a serious organised crime overlapping with corruption, money laundering and other illicit activity.

the world has never been more connected. Criminal networks have never had more access to different trade routes and different technologies and methods of avoiding detection and covering up their activites.”

Oli Wright, TRAFFIC Project Officer speaking on TalkLandscapes.

From timber and fisheries to insects, shark fins and sea cucumbers, Wright explains how trafficking affects ecosystems, livelihoods, economies and global security, far beyond high-profile species such as rhinos, elephants and tigers.

The episode also dives into the rising use of technology by conservation organisations and enforcement agencies, including TRAFFIC-developed tools including SharkTrace, TimberTracker, machine learning for airport X-ray screening, and the 3D-printed shark fin identification kits used to support frontline customs officers.
