Timber Trade Workshop held in London

London, UK, 29th November 2013—A workshop on the European Union (EU) Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade (FLEGT) Action Plan was held earlier this month, specifically for members of the UK Timber Trade Federation (UK TTF).

Representatives from TRAFFIC, UK TTF, the UK’s competent authority for the EU Timber Regulation, the National Measurement Office (NMO) and NEPCon (a timber monitoring organisation) as well as regional experts from Latin America and Africa engaged with workshop delegates through presentations and by reviewing EU timber trade case studies.

The aim of the workshop was to build the capacity of participants on how they can efficiently identify the scope and type of information required in the risk assessment process, provide guidance as to some of the issues to consider, as well as the tools and support available to undertake a credible and robust risk assessment.

The workshop also provided a space for discussing options available to operators and sharing the experiences in meeting the EU Timber Regulation so far. Participants responded positively to both the structure and content of the workshop. There have been a number of requests for similar events elsewhere and discussions are currently underway as to how to best organise these.
