Malaysia Online Shark and Ray Trade Reveals Lucrative Market Beyond Fins

“From Sea to Screen: Malaysia’s Online Shark and Ray Trade,” a study by TRAFFIC Southeast Asia and WWF-Malaysia, revealed a lucrative and growing online market for shark and ray products. Conducted between October and December 2022, the survey recorded sales across major e-commerce platforms including Facebook, Shopee, and Lazada — representing at least 5.25 million kilograms of products. The study also revealed a wholly different picture of local consumption of sharks and rays – that it extends beyond the often-highlighted shark fin. Online, fresh and processed meat dominated in volume, while whole bodies appeared most frequently in posts.
