Serving the Parties for almost 30 years, the Elephant Trade Information System (ETIS) is the CITES-mandated programme that holds the world’s most comprehensive database on illegal ivory trade. TRAFFIC collects, manages and analyses ETIS data on globally reported seizures of ivory and other elephant products to inform CITES processes.

informing policy
The ETIS report to CITES forms the foundation to identify Parties requiring attention under the National Ivory Action Plan (NIAP) process. Parties participating in the NIAP process develop plans to combat illegal trade in elephant specimens, including activities related to five pillars of implementation spanning legislation, national and international enforcement actions, public outreach, and reporting. Since 2002, TRAFFIC has produced reports containing comprehensive analyses of the ETIS data for consideration at each meeting of the CITES Conference of the Parties.

ETIS ONLINE
ETIS Online was launched in 2020 as a web portal for the ETIS database, allowing CITES Parties to submit, view, download and validate ETIS data related to their country or territory. It contains publicly available resources including summaries of the latest ETIS data aggregates and a network maps tool to explore the illegal ivory trade networks. The Resources page provides links to the latest ETIS reports to CITES and other exciting programme updates such as annual newsletters.
