Pangolin smuggling in China

Three separate cases involving pangolin smuggling have been reported recently in the Chinese media.

The Foshan Daily reports that two smugglers were sentenced to 5 and 2 years imprisonment for illegally transporting 11 pangolins from Guangxi province to Gaoming, Guangdong province in June 2007. They were sezied by policemen as they were unloading the animals at a restaurant. The two were also fined CNY 2,000 (USD 280) and CNY 1,000 (USD140), respectively.

YNTV reports that on 24 January, Luxi forest police seized 19 live pangolins during a routine check. The animals had been smuggled into China from Myanmar.

Finally, 0579.net reports that on 15 February, 60 frozen pangolins and three boxes of snakes were seized from a coach by traffic police in Jinhua. The driver said the items were from Guangzhou and bound for Shanghai.
