8 years & fine for ivory smuggling

On March 18, 2012, Shenyang Intermediate People's Court sentenced Li Dongmei to 8 years in jail and a fine of up to CNY 50,000 yuan (USD7,900) for smuggling 8.416 kg of ivory. The ivory was sent to Li from France, and she onward sold them through the internet.

Pangolins & reptiles seized, China

On 28th February 2012, local security police in Fujian Province seized 11 live monitor lizards, 6 live pangolins and 39 frozen pangolins from a coach en route from Shantou, Guangdong Province, to Fuzhou, Fujian Province. The live pangolins have been released and the monitor lizards sent to Zhangzhou Zoo. More: http://www.cwca.org.cn/Article/ShowArticle.asp?ArticleID=25459

117 bear paws seized in China

On 14th December 2011, officers of the Hunchun Anti-smuggling Sub-bureau confiscated 117 bear paws weighing a combined 126 kg in Hunchun, Jilin Province, close to China's border with the Russian Far East. The National Wildlife Detection Center later identified 103 of the paws as from Asiatic Black Bears Ursus thibetanus, the remainder (14) from Brown Bears Ursus arctos.

60 kg ivory seized in Guangdong Province, China

On 27th October 2011, Gongbei Customs in Zhuhai city, Guangdong Province, discovered 16 pieces of elephant tusks weighing 60 kg in a car from Macao.

Protected wildlife parts found at TCM shop in Taiwan

Enforcement agencencies in Taiwan have raided a traditional medicine shop and uncovered evidence of illegal processing of deer antlers and turtle shells, plus parts of protected wildlife including a rhino head (with horn), Tiger bones and bear gall bladders. An unlicenced handgun and ammunition was also found, according to the China Times.

Pangolin smugglers jailed in China

In May 2011, a Chinese couple were sentenced to 3 and 5 years each respectively in jail after they bought 11 pangolins in Myanmar, smuggled them into China, before the couple was arrested in Houqiao Town by local forestry police, reports a Chinese government website.

On 2nd May 2011, Shenzhen Customs seized 10 kg of Tiger bones, comprising one whole skeleton, 3 skulls and other bones at Shenzhen Gulf Port, Guangdong Province, according to a Chinese government news website.

Tiger, elephant and other wildlife parts smuggled to fund drug habit

Police in Yunnan Province found parts of protected wildlife including Tiger claws and teeth, elephant ivory and skins, deer antlers and bear gall bladders after they raided a house with an unusual smell emanating from it. A suspect arrested at the scene told police the parts had been smuggled from Myanmar to sell to enable him to buy drugs.

Sumatran Rhino, other rhino horns and ivory seized in China

On 26th February 2011, Kunming Forest Police released details of two rhino horn seizures that took place in 2010. In October 2010, two suspects were arrested in Kunming in possession of a Sumatran Rhino horn they had purchased in Myanmar. In November 2010, a man and his wife were arrested in Kunming on suspicion of trying to sell 2 Bkack Rhino horns they had bought in Viet Nam. Later, their house and shop were raided where rhino horn powder and ivory were discovered.

11 and 13 years in jail for pangolin and bear paw buyers

In separate cases, two men, one convicted of buying 27 pangolins and 8 bear paws, the other of buying 34 pangolins and 10 bear paws, and hiring couriers to transport them to Guangzhou city have been sentenced to 11 years in jail and fined CNY10,000 (USD1,520) and 13 years in jail and fined CNY20,000 (USD3,040) respectively reports CWCA.org

A man convicted after 115 bear paws and 40 pangolins were seized from a minibus in November 2009 has been sentenced to 10 years in jail, reports the China Green Times. Four others are still wanted in connection with the case.

A 65 year old, man who arrived in Taiwan from Malawai, via Hong Kong was stopped by Customs and found to be in possession of 21 ivory tusks weighing 51 kg, plus 8 kg of semi-processed ivory, reports the China Times
