Hanoi - Police arrested a man accused of smuggling five rhinoceros horns weighing nearly 18 kilograms into the country, an official said Tuesday. Tran Van Lap, 48, was arrested in the northern province of Lao Cai last Saturday on charges of "illegal cross-border transportation of goods," and was brought to Ho Chi Minh City on the same day for interrogation, according to Ly The Son, a senior police officer with Ho Chi Minh City's economic police department.

Customs authorities at the city's Tan Son Nhat Airport detected five horns believed to come from rhinos in Lap's checked luggage as he arrived in the city on a flight from South Africa in January, according to the police.
