New report finds illegal hunting and bushmeat trade of wildlife in Savanna Africa could result in a ‘conservation crisis’ if unchecked

New York, NY and Hyderabad (India)  October 12, 2012 – A new report published today by Panthera confirms that widespread illegal hunting and the bushmeat trade occur more frequently and with greater impact on wildlife populations in the Southern and Eastern savannas of Africa than previously thought, and if unaddressed could potentially cause a ‘conservation crisis.’ The report challenges previously held beliefs of the impact of illegal bushmeat hunting and trade in Africa with new data from experts.

Tiger skins, elephant ivory and bones seized in Malaysia

Update: A 29 year old man appeared in Alor Setar Sessions Court on 15th February, charged under the Wildlife Conservation Act 2010 of possessing pieces of 8 Tiger skins, 22 Tiger bone pieces, 6 African Elephant tusks and one antelope horn. Bail was set at MYR70,000 (USD23,000). The trial date is yet to be announced.

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, 10th February 2012—Eight Tiger skins, elephant tusks and bags of bones were seized in northern Malaysia, according to a statement released today by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment.

Tiger parts seized during restaurant raid

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, 16th March 2011—A restaurant owner could face RM600,000 (USD196,000) in fines and time in jail after authorities found him in possession of meat and parts of several protected species including several pieces of dried Tiger parts.

Officers from the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan) in Pahang, a state on the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia, found close to 17 kilogrammes of Common Barking Deer meat, two skinned Mouse Deer, 54 Argus Pheasant feathers, a White-breasted Waterhen when they raided the man’s house and shop in a raid yesterday (15th March)

Measures to conserve Saiga antelopes agreed

14th September 2010–Representatives from Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Russia, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and UN bodies meeting in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, under the auspices of the Convention on Migratory Species (UNEP/CMS) have agreed an international conservation pact for the migratory Saiga Antelope Saiga tatarica.
