Singapore, 26th May 2017—Singapore is the world’s second largest shark fin trader by value after Hong Kong according to a new report by TRAFFIC and WWF, who are calling on Singapore to improve transparency in the global shark fin trade through more robust monitoring.

Philippines workshop promotes co-operation between enforcement authorities against illegal eel trade

Nueva Vizcaya, the Philippines, May 2017–80 representatives from local Customs and enforcement agencies attended a workshop on “Effective law enforcement implementation to avert illegal trade of glass eels and other wildlife species”, aimed at improving co-ordination amongst government regulatory and enforcement bodies addressing these issues.

Workshop for southwest Indian Ocean sets stage for monitoring and conservation of sharks and rays

Mauritius, April 19, 2017—Marine experts and conservationists from the WCS (Wildlife Conservation Society), TRAFFIC, the Indian Ocean Commission (IOC), regional governments, and other groups have produced a status report and roadmap for protecting sharks and rays in the southwest Indian Ocean, one of the last remaining strongholds for these ancient creatures in the world’s oceans.

Toothfish floundering after years without CITES protection

Johannesburg, South Africa, 25th September 2016—a fisheries management body has written to the Secretariat of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) to report that many Parties are failing to co-operate with its trade regulations and even licencing illegal fishing vessels that catch Patagonian and Antarctic Toothfish in its waters.

Indian Ocean sharks at risk from deepwater gillnets

Update: 27th May—Australia has submitted a proposal to ban deepwater gillnets in the Southern Indian Ocean Fisheries Agreement Area. TRAFFIC urges the other seven Parties to support this proposal.
